The Peter Anderson interview

In June I sat down with Somerset’s former Chief Executive, Peter Anderson, to talk about his life and career. In a very entertaining interview he talked about his career as a Policeman and how he set about transforming Somerset after the so-called glory years of the 70s & 80s. I only wish I could publish the whole interview!

Part one was published in the East Devon Resident magazine in late June. Here Peter talks joining the Police, Hong Kong and finding Somerset:

Cricket at the heart of it!

Part two was published in the East Devon Resident magazine in late July. Here Peter talks Police, Hong Kong and finding Somerset:

The man who would be known as Chief!

Here are some of the comments that didn’t make the final cut. Here Panda talks about Tavare, Bulbeck and Atherton.

Chris Tavare

He was a really good player.  We went to Luton for one game and Curtly Ambrose was playing for Northants and the Wicket that day was very bouncy. Ambrose hit Peter Roebuck who opened and soon after he was out so out strode Tav.  You could tell the international experience has picked up facing the fast West Indians.  He was brilliant that day. He had a dour reputation but I saw him play some stunning innings’. A quiet man but he was made of steel.

Matt Bulbeck

I signed Matt Bulbeck after Peter Bowler came out of the nets and said ‘Chief – this lad Bulbeck is swinging both ways in the indoor nets. If he can swing it indoors he can swing it anywhere’. That was good enough for me and I signed him. It was a shame he had those back problems – he would have been another 1,000 wickets per season player but for that.

Grockles

When the internet first came about I was made aware of this Grockles site. I used to come home late at night and I would see things on there which I didn’t like so I joined and called myself Gladiator so started piling in. Then it was discovered who Gladiator was by some computer buff by accident and he announced it. And that drew me in and it drove me crazy so that’s why I have nothing to do with social media and all that nonsense.

Michael Atherton

Panda was often outspoken but always passionate about Somerset CCC and any threats to the future of the club. This did see him in some high profile arguments with high profile characters. One such spat was with former England captain Michael Atherton, who said of Peter:

“Somerset’s rent-a-quote, Peter Anderson, enjoyed another opportunity to stick the boot in, accusing the would-be reformers of knowing nothing about the game. It is undeniable, of course, that an ex-copper from Hong Kong should know more about cricket than the combined experience of two England captains.”

Panda chuckles as he recollects: “I have never actually spoken to him (Atherton) as we have only crossed swords in writing. Vic Marks tells me that we would get on if we spoke. I saw Atherton at Taunton once and nearly went over to say ‘hi’, but didn’t get around to it in the end.
