Isn’t it a shame that in a week when the County Championship got itself set up for another exciting finish the powers that be decided to make announcements about the future of T20 Cricket in this country? This inevitably drew focus away from the Royal London One Day Cup Final at Lords and the last round of Championship games to be played in the week ahead as supporters debated the plusses and disadvantages of a city based franchise tournament and how this may affect the county structure.
I have made my feelings known about franchise Cricket, both on BBC Somerset and The Incider, and I am definitely not a supporter of any such changes to county cricket, but could the announcement have been delayed by a week or two so this season could be completed first?
This week could be the most historic ever for Somerset County Cricket Club and it was disappointing to see fans getting hot under the collar on Twitter late on Thursday evening about future possibilities when hearts and minds should be set on cheering the guys to victory at Taunton next week.
The club will host a Q&A with members after the day’s play on Tuesday – which is fair enough – but, again, I would much rather this was after the season close.
The implications of franchise T20 cricket are huge and I am not dismissing them, I just think the way things have panned out this past week have proven to be terribly timed.
