Alviro called up by South Africa

by Jeremy Blackmore

alviroAlviro Petersen will miss five weeks of Somerset’s season following his call-up to the South African side for their upcoming series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.

Somerset’s overseas batsman who scored 155 against Lancashire earlier this month will be away between July 11 and August 14.

Alviro, who has 30 Test caps for South Africa, said: “Having had such a good start to my season with Somerset of course I am very disappointed to be having to spend time away.

“However it is always an honour to be picked for my country and I look forward to returning to pick up my season back at the County Ground later in August.”

Dave Nosworthy the Somerset Director of Cricket said: “Congratulations to Alviro once again for being chosen to represent his country – I have no doubt that he will perform superbly. Naturally it is always tough to lose ones overseas professional – but these days such signings come with the territory. He will be away for just the five weeks and we will hopefully be announcing a replacement player shortly for this period.”

Hopefully Alviro will be available for our clash with fellow championship contenders Middlesex before his departure. That game takes place at Uxbridge between July 7-10.
