West of England Premier Cricket League Premier One round-up – Saturday 21 June 2014
Somerset’s James Regan top scored for Taunton St Andrews at the weekend, but his knock wasn’t enough to stop his side going down by seven wickets to Downend Cricket Club.
Batting at number four, as well as keeping wicket for St Andrews, James hit 40 off 50 balls with six fours and a six.
But, with the next highest scores being Dave Reading’s 34 and Lloyd Alley’s 25, St Andrews could only make 164 before being dismissed, after facing only 39 of their 50 overs.
In reply, Downend knocked off the required runs in just 21.2 overs, despite losing two early wickets, James picking up a catch behind the stumps to dismiss Ben Ringrose.
Half centuries for Michael Bracewell and Curtis Blakemore though, sealed the Downend victory which keeps them one place above St Andrews in the league table.
Meanwhile, Taunton Deane (home club of Somerset’s Jack Leach) beat Bath on Saturday to move ahead of Frocester at the top of the table. Jack, who has been in action for Somerset Second XI this week, did not play in the match with Bath.
Elsewhere in the division, two former Somerset players were in action in the clash between Bridgewater and Weston Super Mare at The Parks, alongside two members of the Second XI.
Captaining Bridgwater to a comprehensive 124 run victory, Steffan Jones returned figures of 4-1-18-2 with the ball.
Robbie Montgomery and Chris Skidmore, who both played for Somerset Second XI at this year’s T20 finals day, both opened the bowling for Bridgwater, Robbie taking 1-12 in six overs and Chris picking up 1-34 in eight overs.
To complete the Somerset connection, Pete Trego’s brother Sam scored 47 for Weston.
Bridgwater made 264-7 in their 50 overs, while Weston were dismissed for 140 in 33.4 overs.
