Fan’s view into 2019: Ronnie Prentice

  • Who are you, where do you live and how long have you supported Somerset?

Ronnie Prentice from Scotland – say as it is!! Supporter since 1975 since Somerset were on TV in Gillette Cup that season. Was hooked after that.

  • Overall how do you feel Somerset performed in 2018?

T20 was good, but fell when the pressure was on I guess. CC1 was a solid campaign without really threatening Surrey after early season promise. 50 over season was slightly disappointing

  • Who was your stand-out performer on the field during the season?

Championship – for me it was Tom Abell as he is captain too and he certainly came of age. He also improved his white ball skills in the last year or two

One Day – Lewis Gregory- Quite simply I’m a big fan

  • What will be your stand-out memory of last season and why?

For me it has to be the c Trescothick b Overton hat trick. That can’t happen too often especially when the catcher is an outfielder so that is right up there for me.

  • Are you happy with our preparations building up to 2019 (recruitment, preseason, etc.)

Bowling looks strong with the addition of Brooks who I think will do well. Gives us the chance to rotate and keep all the bowlers reasonably fresh. I think we are a batter light though and Trescothick has it all to prove this year. I hope he proves me wrong but legend that he is maybe he has gone on too long. The marquee seemed to work last year so who knows how we will react after 2 weeks overseas. Hopefully we have got it right.

  • How do you think we will perform in 2019:
    • Specsavers County Championship

Can Surrey be caught? I think they can but they are strong. I think we might have as much bowling firepower now but see my comments re batting above. A lot will depend too on what they do with the Taunton pitches. If they revert to the old style pitches its going to be difficult

  • Royal London One Day Cup

On paper we have a good 50 over team so I am hopeful in this competition too. I think Jamie Overton can be a big player in this form of the game

  • NatWest T20 Blast

At time of writing this we have still to sign a second overseas for this so will reserve full judgement till after that. Jerome Taylor did okay last year but I don’t think an out and out bowler was what we needed. His availability for the whole season is a factor though I guess

  • Who do you expect to be our most important player in 2019?

Can I have two? Okay Tom Abell and Lewis Gregory. Involved in a 3 forms and our captains!!!

Who is the young player you think can develop into a key player in the new season?

Hopefully Tom Banton. We need to replace Myburgh in the white ball game and for me he is the man to do so. Hopefully he gets the opportunity and takes it.

  • Are you looking forward to watching Somerset under floodlights?

Excited – I’ve been to Taunton under lights on previous occasions when the TV were there. It’s always a great occasion and the place just looks immense when jam packed. Hopefully the floodlights will enable us to get more play on grey days at home CC games too!!!!

  • In general what is your main hope for the 2019 season for Somerset?

I hope for some exciting cricket and where we can compete in every session to the end. Obviously the hope is silverware and the CC title, but at the moment I would take any trophy.
