Groenewald has bowled 152 overs and taken 16 wickets for the Derby club this season at an average of 29.0. However he has not been selected for their last two LV=CC games having told the club’s officials he would not be extending his current contract.
Pietermaritzburg-born Groenewald has spent five years at Derbyshire, playing 72 first-class matches, taking 229 wickets, at an average of 29. He has also played for Warwickshire.
Groenewald said: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining Somerset, as it is a Club I’ve held in high regard for many years. I couldn’t be happier committing the next 3 years to the Club and I can’t wait to get started.”
Somerset’s Director of Cricket Dave Nosworthy said of his new capture: “Signing a bowler of Tim’s quality for the remainder of the season and then for the next three years is great news for the Club. Tim has been on our ‘look out’ list for some time and it is fantastic to be able to add him into a talented crop of quality bowlers at the Club.
“His experience and performances will add real value to our team and our young bowlers, and I have no doubt that his expertise and professionalism will strengthen the team as a whole.”
This is certainly a showing of intent by Somerset and he will offer experience and competition to our pace attack as we enter a crucial month in the season. With Steve Kirby making his comeback in the second team we will have plenty of options to keep the team fresh.
