Tom Barber will play for Somerset in the first pre-season friendly against Gloucestershire at Taunton Vale starting on Monday. Barber has joined Somerset on a short-term contract having impressed Director of Cricket Matt Maynard during the recent training sessions at Desert Springs. He will be joined by another player making his bow in Somerset colours, Ryan Davies, who signed in last year from Kent.
Barber was released by Hampshire along with Joe Gatting and Basil Akram at the end of the 2015 season having failed to make a first team appearance during the campaign. But the left-arm seam bowler had broken into the Hampshire 1st XI in 2014 against a touring Sri Lanka A side on 14th August 2014. Barber finished with figures of 0 for 28 from 4 overs in the game which was later rain abandoned.
He made his second and final List A appearance in a 50-over game against Yorkshire at the Rose Bowl and made quite some introduction to first class cricket dismissing Kane Williamson and Andrew Gale in consecutive deliveries, finishing with 2 for 22. Both of his victims were caught behind by former Somerset keeper Matthew Bates. But after this his chances at Southampton were limited.
His last game in Hampshire colours was a 2nd XI game at Taunton in August last year where he scored 27 not out and took 1 for 47.
Barber, a right-handed batsman, has also represented England U-19 beginning with a tour of South Africa tour in 2012.
The 20-year-old will hope he can follow another player that joined Somerset having been released by Hampshire, Adam Hose, who had a decent 50-over campaign in 2015 and will line up alongside Barber at the Vale.
The game will be played as a 12-a-side contest and Jim Allenby will captain Somerset in place of Chris Rogers who has arrived in the country but has been given time to recover from jet lag. It is the same scenario with Roleof van der Merwe who will also sit the game out.
The Somerset squad is: Marcus Trescothick, Tom Abell, Adam Hose, James Hildreth, Jim Allenby (c), Johann Myburgh, Pete Trego, Ryan Davies (wk), Craig Overton, Tim Groenewald, Jamie Overton, Tom Barber.
