Second XI Trophy – Somerset Second XI v Gloucestershire – Taunton Vale, August 7, 2014

Somerset 265-8 off 50 overs (TD Rouse 68, MTC Waller 67, TB Abell 54, J Overton 41 not out, RJ Montgomery 2-15, LC Norwell 2-48) beat Gloucestershire Second XI off 34.2 overs (JH Barrett 47, M Lezar 31, GH Dockrell 5-29, MTC Waller 3-22, JE Burke 2-31) by 136 runs.

Somerset: 2 points, Gloucestershire: 0 points

Somerset’s George Dockrell and Max Waller shared eight wickets as they bowled the Seconds to their second crushing victory over Gloucestershire in two days at Taunton Vale.

With Jack Leach preferred in the spinner’s slot for the first team’s trip to Lord’s, the pair took the opportunity to press their case by dismissing Gloucestershire for just 129 in this Second XI 50 over Trophy match.

Dockrell took five wickets and there were three for Waller as Gloucestershire crumbled in response to Somerset’s 265-8, which had included half-centuries for Tom Abell and Tim Rouse as well as 67 from Waller himself.

The 136-run victory comes just a day after the Seconds inflicted an innings defeat on Gloucestershire in the championship.

It looked a very different story though early in Somerset’s innings as they collapsed to 17-4 in the sixth over, with Chris Jones, James Burke, Josh Davey and James Regan all back in the pavilion in single figures. To compound Somerset’s misery, Regan had been run out without scoring.

AbellTom Abell though, rarely goes a match without making a contribution these days and after scoring back to back centuries in the championship, weighed in with a half-century here to calm Somerset’s nerves. Joined by Waller, the pair shared a stand of 90 for the fifth wicket in 23.4 overs, bringing up the Somerset 100 in the process.

The partnership was finally broken when Abell offered a caught and bowled chance after making 54 off 87 balls with five fours. Somerset were 107-5 and still in need of another partnership if they were to set a competitive total.

Waller found a willing partner in Rouse who upped the pace, knocking 68 off just 56 balls with four fours and three sixes. The pair put on a quick 80 in 12.2 overs, taking the score onto 187 before Waller was caught behind for 67. The leg-spinner had played an excellent anchor role, facing 103 balls and hitting five fours.

A third valuable partnership followed as Jamie Overton joined Rouse and the two put on 58 in just 5.3 overs at a run rate of 10.5.

Former Somerset Second XI bowler Robbie Montgomery picked up two late wickets, including Rouse, but Overton continued the attack, finishing unbeaten on 41 off 25 balls with four fours and a six.

Montgomery finished with figures of 2-15, while Liam Norwell also took two wickets for 48.

When Gloucestershire batted, James Burke (2-31) picked up two early wickets including Miles Hammond for 16, before skipper Joe Barrett and Marc Lezar briefly threatened with a 44-run partnership in 11.1 overs.

But Waller then took the first of three wickets, having Lezar stumped by Regan for 31 with the score 76-3.

Dockers4Waller and Dockrell then ran through the rest of the Gloucestershire innings, finishing with hugely impressive figures of 5-29 and 3-22 respectively.

During one six over spell, the visitors lost four wickets for just 17 runs and in total their last eight fell for 53 in 18.2 overs. No other player made it to double figures. Barrett was eventually the last man out for 47 with 15.4 overs of the Gloucestershire innings still remaining.
