The county cricket season is one which, because of its nature and specifically its three competitions, makes it hard to come up with an overall picture of where each of the 18 teams are relative to each other at any time in the season.
At The Incider we have been thinking about this for some time with the aim of achieving this in the form of a league table. The challenge was to come up with a way that weighted performance fairly across all three competitions.
The table that we have produced follows a similar basis for each of the three competitions with points for wins, losses and ties/draws/no results as applicable to each competition and bonus points. The points system gives greater credit for away performances than home and weights division one games slightly higher than division two. Uniquely the bonus points reward margin of victory and individual landmarks in the form of centuries and five-wicket hauls.
With the championship now in a month-long gap for the 50-over competition which is now a week into the group stages we felt this was a good time to introduce the rankings and hopefully get a bit of a debate going.
The aim is to update the tables every week through the season, although we might do it more frequently during the group stages of the respective one-day competitions.
We have played around with the weightings for the different competitions and over the last week or so produced numerous iterations of the tables and this is, although arbitrary, is what we believe to be the fairest. But these are The Incider Rankings, they are our rankings and it is our points system.
The points system is as follows:
- Home Win 10 points
- Away Win 15 points
- Home Loss – 8 points
- Away Loss -5 points
