Chief Executive Guy Lavender told The Somerset County Gazette recently that there were “some more signings still to make over the winter period”.
And after this week’s AGM meeting, club chairman Andy Nash said on Twitter: “No announcements tonight. Hopefully in the next week or so. #paperwork”
Rumours abound that Kevin Pietersen could be on his way to Taunton, despite Maynard attempting to play down the chances of this happening last week. The player courted controversy again the other day, calling on the ECB to adopt an Australian-style T20 franchise system. In doing so, he branded young English players on £15-18,000 a year as “muppets”, something that is unlikely to endear him to fans or prospective teammates of any county side he may join in 2015.
Somerset narrowly missed out on signing Australian Joe Burns when he was unexpectedly called up to play Test cricket by his country just before Christmas. AB De Villiers was another who Maynard was targeting, but appears to be unavailable owing to commitments with South Africa.
However counties’ ability to sign big name players could be hit as a result of last week’s surprise announcement by the ECB that the salary cap is to be cut by 10% with immediate effect. That means a new limit of £1.976 million a year per county from April. There has been media speculation that this could put an end to Surrey’s hopes of re-signing Pietersen for 2015.
The move is part of an initiative by the ECB to encourage counties to develop homegrown players, something Somerset have excelled at through their academy system.
However, the county has seen a number of players leave the club over the past year or two, including Nick Compton, Arul Suppiah, Chris Jones, Jos Buttler, Alviro Petersen and Steve Kirby. With Craig Kieswetter expected to miss the whole of the 2015 season following his eye injury, there are serious concerns about the county’s lack of strength in depth.

We want you to tell us:
- Do you think Matt Maynard needs to sign another player(s) to boost the squad and enable Somerset to challenge for silverware in 2015? And if so what kind of player(s)?
- Do you think Somerset should sign Kevin Pietersen, either for the whole season, just for the Nat West T20 Blast or not at all?
- Which other player(s) would you like to see join Somerset?
All responses are anonymous and we won’t ask for names or any other personal information – just your views.
We’ll publish the results on The Incider early next week.
